What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a specific learning difference that primarily affects reading and language processing. It is neurological in origin and is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, poor spelling, and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language.
Importantly, dyslexia is not related to intelligence, vision problems, or lack of educational opportunity. Many individuals with dyslexia are highly creative, innovative thinkers who excel in areas such as problem-solving, visual-spatial reasoning, and big-picture thinking.
Common Signs of Dyslexia
Early Years (Ages 5-7):
- Difficulty learning letter names and sounds
- Trouble rhyming words
- Slow to develop reading skills
- Difficulty blending sounds to make words
- Confusion between similar-looking letters (b/d, p/q)
- Reluctance to read aloud
Primary School (Ages 8-12):
- Reading below expected grade level
- Difficulty with spelling, even common words
- Avoidance of reading tasks
- Slow reading speed with many errors
- Difficulty with reading comprehension
- Problems with sequencing (days of the week, months)
- Difficulty copying from the board
Secondary School and Beyond:
- Continued reading and spelling difficulties
- Trouble with written expression
- Difficulty with foreign language learning
- Slow processing of written information
- Avoidance of reading-heavy subjects
- Reliance on memorization rather than reading
The Impact on Learning
Dyslexia affects more than just reading. Students may experience:
- Academic challenges: Difficulty accessing curriculum content that relies heavily on reading
- Self-esteem issues: Frustration and anxiety about academic performance
- Processing speed: Taking longer to complete tasks involving reading or writing
- Working memory: Difficulty holding and manipulating information
- Organization: Challenges with planning and sequencing tasks
Strengths Often Associated with Dyslexia
While dyslexia presents challenges, many individuals with dyslexia demonstrate remarkable strengths:
- Creative and innovative thinking
- Strong visual-spatial reasoning
- Excellent problem-solving abilities
- Big-picture thinking and pattern recognition
- Strong oral communication skills
- Resilience and determination
Effective Intervention Strategies
Structured Literacy Approaches:
Evidence-based programs that teach reading systematically and explicitly:
- Phonics instruction focusing on sound-symbol relationships
- Multisensory learning techniques (visual, auditory, kinesthetic)
- Systematic progression from simple to complex
- Explicit teaching of spelling rules and patterns
- Regular practice and review
Accommodations and Support:
- Extra time for reading and writing tasks
- Access to audiobooks and text-to-speech technology
- Use of graphic organizers for writing
- Reduced copying from the board
- Oral presentations as alternatives to written reports
- Assistive technology (spell-checkers, word prediction)
Building Confidence:
- Focus on strengths and interests
- Celebrate progress, not just perfection
- Provide opportunities for success
- Teach self-advocacy skills
- Create a supportive, understanding environment
